Vision and Goals
The February 28, 2023 election offers Chicagoans a historic opportunity to put the community’s voice at the center of public safety in our city. As the first-ever 19th Police District Council members, Maurilio, Jenny, and Sam aim to empower our neighbors to create a safer community, together.
Maurilio, Jenny, and Sam each come from different neighborhoods in the 19th District, and from different backgrounds and life experiences. But they share a common vision and goals:
Modernize Our Approach to Public Safety by...
Advocate to expand emergency services to include mental health crisis teams, substance abuse treatment programs, and homelessness response providers
Uplift community initiatives aimed at reducing crime before it happens, like research-based violence prevention organizations and techniques such as Chicago CRED, READI Chicago, and Communities Partnering for Peace (CP4P)
Provide straightforward resources for community members to learn about public safety incidents and resources in the 19th Police District.
Seek progress reports on court-ordered consent decree reforms like annual in-service training, data collection, and community engagement
Communicate the community’s public safety concerns to city officials and police leaders in monthly public meetings
Improve Police Transparency and Accountability
Promote Responsible, Fair, and Effective Policing
Ensure police leaders are hiring more therapists for officers, maintaining officer days off, and offering more training, all to allow officers to perform to the best of their ability
Delegate non-violent tasks and responsibilities to civilian workers or social experts to optimize police effectiveness when and where they are actually needed
Elevate Our Community Voice
Amplify the voices of the LGBTQ+ community, people of color, and other marginalized communities in public safety decisions
Update residents on local crime statistics provided by police leaders via regular notices to the community
Host discussions around the latest, data-backed methods to reduce crime and expand people’s understanding of the role police play in keeping our community safe
Create and Support a Strong Community Commission for Public Safety & Accountability
Evaluate, vet, and nominate Commission candidates that will act in accordance with our vision and values
As the largest district in the city, fight to ensure the needs of our district are appropriately heard and represented by the 7-member Commission
Form a coalition of Alderpeople and other elected officials to strengthen our demand for action and empower them to demand and enact policy aimed at improving community safety and police accountability within our district
